New insights in the molecular mechanisms regulating peritoneal permeability.

چکیده
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is used in approximately 15% of dialysis patients worldwide. With the reduction of acute peritonitis, the major problem associated with PD is now the high incidence of ultrafiltration (UF) failure, which can affect up to 50% of PD patients treated for more than 6 years w1x. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have shown that peritoneal permeability for small solutes increases with time on PD, which induces a faster absorption of glucose, an early dissipation of the osmotic gradient and, eventually, UF failure w1,2x. The relevance of these modifications is illustrated by the fact that high peritoneal membrane (PM) permeability is a significant risk factor, predicting both technical failure and death in PD patients w3x. In this commentary, we will discuss how recent structural, functional and molecular data provide new insights in our understanding of the modifications of the PM in long-term PD.

Molecular mechanisms regulating immune responses in thromboangiitis obliterans: a comprehensive review
Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is a thrombotic-occlusive as well as an inflammatory peripheral vascular disease with unknown etiology. Recent evidence has supported the immunopathogenesis of the disease, however, the factors contributing to the altered immune function and vascular tissue inflammation are still unclear. This review was intended to collate the more current knowledge on the regu...
متن کاملMolecular genetic control of leaf lifespan in plants - A review
Leaf senescence constitutes the last stage of leaf development in plants and proceeds through a highly regulated program in order to redistribution of micro- and macro-nutrients from the senescing leaves to the developing/growing plant organs. Initiation and progression of leaf senescence is accompanied by massive sequential alterations at various levels of leaf biology including leaf morpholog...

Background: Despite advances toward an improved understanding of the evasive mechanisms leading to the establishment of cystic echinococcosis, the discovery of specific immunosuppressive mechanisms and related factors are of great interest in the development of an immunotherapeutic approach. Objective: To elucidate immunosuppressive effects of bioactive factors contained in chromatographic frac...
متن کاملSalt and water transport across alveolar and distal airway epithelia in the adult lung.
Substantial progress has been made in understanding the role of the distal airway and alveolar epithelial barriers in regulating lung fluid balance. Molecular, cellular, and whole animal studies have demonstrated that reabsorption of fluid from the distal air spaces of the lung is driven by active sodium transport. Several different in vivo, in situ, and isolated lung preparations have been use...
متن کاملRegulation of Follicular Growth and Development in Sheep
This manuscript reviews the present knowledge related to folliculogenesis in sheep.Folliculogenesis starts with formation of primordial follicles before birth, present as a pool containing a certain number of follicles. By the attainment of puberty, a group of follicles from that pool starts to grow, a process known as primordial follicle activation or recruitment. The number of growing primord...
